Introduction to the Critical Investigation: Issues and Debates

 Media Factsheet 147

1) Write a one-sentence answer to the initial questions in the factsheet:
  • Do fashion magazines contribute to the occurrence of eating disorders?
Yes, magazines do contribute to this issue as the images used are often of one body type  creating an "ideal body" which in fact has been retouched into removing what is seen as imperfections.
  • Do games make people behave violently?
Yes to an extent, as when playing these games it can influence how someone acts in the real world specifically young teenagers however, others may argue that those who play violent games know that violent behavior shouldn't be reinforced.
  • Does advertising work?
Yes it does as people memories certain advert which could result to them buying the product however, others see  successful companies to make some of their products seem better or bigger than it is.
  • Does social media generate misogyny?
No, as social media has adapted to become a place for consumers to interact and express their opinions a misogynistic opinion may be one of them.
2) Having read the two sides to the discussion, what is your opinion on the effects debate?

Personally, I do believe that violence in the media reinforced in the real world to an extent to depending on the persons morals and mental stability. There are some people who are passive and allow violent media to influence their everyday behavior. There are others who do not allow these negative influences to effect their mind set. This has been proven in certain cases where violence in media has lead to crime. For example Jamie Bulgar case .
3) Summarise the two sides of the example issues and debates on page 2 of the factsheet:

  • New technology and privacy
New technology is beneficial due to the fact that  consumers are able to communicate with others when they choose however, as an result there is not a lot of privacy that certain people abuse in order to get information. For example pedophiles may be able to use private information to groom young children.
  • News influenced by twitter
Twitter is just one example of influences on news. It gives the public an opportunity to get involved
  • Social media and racism, sexism or threats online
It allows consumers to publish their own opinions and having discussions.Nevertheless, with this, negative comments such as racism and sexism may be encouraged.

4) What is your opinion on the growth of transgender issues in media debates?

In my personal opinion, I feel like the growth of transgender issues has effected our society in the way that it has become more tolerant and open minded.

5) Complete the MIGRAIN table below (also on page 4 of the factsheet) linking media products to issues and debates. For each question, you need to write two or three specific media products (e.g. a film, TV programme, a particular newspaper or news story, a certain music video etc.) that you could use when discussing that media debate.
